Chu Hui Weng once said, “To avoid sickness eat less; to prolong life worry less.” The first step of The Way is to live your life to the fullest by being in good health. Invest your energy in yourself by creating a healthy body and mind so your spirit can blossom. We’ve all survived the holidays, and many of us are saddled with a few extra pounds. There are so many diets out there. What does a person do? I do agree that eating a modest diet is one of the best things you can do for yourself, and years ago I learned it’s not what I ate, it’s what I didn’t eat that made the difference. Instead of following some crazy diet like eating grapefruit, examine your food choices, cut out the processed foods, eliminate most sugars, and strive to follow a whole foods diet, making sure you eat lots of fresh fruit and vegetables. Trick your eyes with smaller plates. Avoid fast food where the portions are huge. In fact, don’t even go there. Stop drinking diet soda. There’s research that indicates it makes people gain weight. Besides, do you really want to put something into your body that has a list of chemicals you can’t even pronounce? Drink water and green tea. And most of all–don’t worry. Worrying adds stress to our lives and doesn’t do one productive thing, besides give a headache. Then after you’ve examined your diet and decided where you need to improve, add exercise to your daily routine. You don’t have to join a gym. Walking shoes and handheld weights work just fine. Be kind with yourself. If you slip up one day, resolve to start fresh the next. Don’t let that give you the excuse to quit your healthy resolutions. Remember, it’s one day at a time.
